BOOST PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK BY CREATING BOUNDARIES

In today’s fast-paced world, productivity is a crucial factor for reaching our goals. However, distractions and interruptions can pose as an obstacle to progress, making it difficult to achieve them. But setting boundaries is an effective way to manage your time and increase productivity at work. In this article, I will share a few scenarios people find themselves whether they are just starting a new job, have been in the system, or even own the business. Not taking cognizance of the “little things” that affect productivity can take its toll on results eventually.

From my experience, observation, chatting with business owners and career people, the major reasons why people fall short as regards productivity include taking on too much. This can be because of being a workaholic, unpleasant work culture that disregards people’s personal time or an overtly accommodating person (people-pleaser). Distraction is another reason people fall short on being productive. For some it is the obsession with social media, while distractions can even come from the workplace as well. I am not suggesting that people should not multitask, there are just times when someone can be at the middle of a project and adding more work will be more of a distraction than anything else. Let me now briefly discuss scenarios people typically find themselves when struggling with productivity.

COLLEAGUES THAT TRANSFER WORK TO YOUR TABLE OR A LOQUACIOUS COLLEAGUE

Do you have colleagues who tend to transfer work to your table or interrupt you with small talk? While it is essential to maintain a positive work environment, it is equally important to set boundaries.

You need to communicate to your colleagues that you value your time and have important deadlines to meet. Alternatively, you can schedule another time to talk or catch-up during breaks. And you can do this gracefully and tactfully without being dismissive. For that chatty colleague, set clear and respectful boundaries to enable you focus on the important task ahead of you. Again, establish boundaries but in a respectful manner. Keeping healthy relationships and occasional chats help to ease work pressure.

PERSONAL TIME VS PROFESSIONAL TIME

Most times, it is just terrible work culture that disregards personal time. Some bosses or colleagues will always reach out even during your vacation! But maintaining a work-life balance is crucial for overall productivity and well-being. Set boundaries, communicate them (this is particularly important) and manage your time effectively. Prioritize your tasks and make a schedule that works for everyone. It is your fault that you are on vacation, and you did a shoddy work handing over. Avoid blurring the lines between the two.

FAMILY TAKING PRODUCTIVE TIME

People working from home can relate to this. While family is a crucial part of our lives, they can also be a source of distraction if we are not intentional about creating boundaries. If you are working from home, it is crucial to communicate your work schedule to your children, spouse, or other family members. The only exceptions are children under the age of 5! You can set specific times for breaks and let your family know when you are unavailable. Similarly, if you are working from an office, you should also communicate your work schedule and ask your family members to respect your time, unless in the case of an emergency.

EXTERNALITIES LIKE GENERAL ELECTIONS, RECESSION, DIP IN SALES

External factors like a general election, (especially if your choice of candidate fails to win), sales slump, inflation can impact your productivity. While you cannot control them, you can set boundaries to manage your time and resources. You can prioritize tasks and focus on what is essential to keep your business afloat or your mindset refocused on what you can control. Like how to treat existing customers better. Additionally, you can communicate with your team and seek their support during challenging times. In some cases, just stay away from sources that remind you of those very things that are hindering your productivity.

In conclusion, setting boundaries is essential for boosting productivity and managing your time effectively. Whether it is dealing with colleagues, family, or external factors, communication and prioritization are key. By setting boundaries, you can achieve so much more and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
