The Nonagenarian’s Letter
Juliana Da Silva is devastated. As if losing all her children and her husband within weeks was not tragic enough, now her daughter-in-law has disappeared with her only grandson, leaving only a letter of apology saying that it was all too much for her and that she needed to start over in a completely new environment. It was at this point that Juliana penned this letter, hoping that one day, her grandson would see it and always remember his roots.
Dearest Bámidélé,
If you are reading this letter, it means that I am no longer with you in this world. But do not despair, my child, for I have lived a life filled with love, loss, and the unshakable belief that God’s plan is always greater than our own.
I write this letter to you, my precious grandson, as you embark on a new journey in a foreign land. Though the distance between us may be vast, know that my love for you knows no bounds. You are the last of the Da Silva line, and it is my deepest hope that you will carry our family legacy with pride and honour.
There are things you must know, my dear Bámidélé. Secrets that I have kept close to my heart, waiting for the right moment to reveal them to you. I was born Juliana Williams, the love child of Chief Williams, a man of great influence and power. Though my early years were marked by the whispers and stares of those who looked down upon me, I never let their judgment define me. Instead, I used their doubt as fuel to propel me forward, to build a life of my own making.
Through hard work and determination, I established charities that have touched the lives of countless people in our community. The Da Silva family name became synonymous with generosity and compassion, and it is a legacy that I hope you will continue to uphold.
Our family is not without its assets, Bámidélé. Properties, investments, and heirlooms that have been passed down through generations. But always remember, my child, that true wealth lies not in material possessions, but in the love we share and the lives we touch.
I have always held fast to the values of integrity, resilience, and unwavering faith. These are the pillars upon which the Da Silva family has stood for generations. In times of hardship, lean on these values, and they will guide you through even the darkest of storms.
My expectations for you are simple, yet profound. Live a life of purpose, my dear Bámidélé. Seek out opportunities to make a difference in the world, no matter how small. Treat others with kindness and respect, for every person you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. And above all else, never lose sight of the love that surrounds you, even in your darkest moments.
I may not be with you in person as you navigate the challenges that life will inevitably bring, but know that my spirit will always be by your side. You are a Da Silva, my precious grandson, and that means that you have the strength, the courage, and the wisdom to overcome any obstacle that stands in your way.
I love you more than words could ever express, Bámidélé. Hold tight to your dreams, and never forget the legacy that runs through your veins.
Yours forever,
Juliana “Maami” Da Silva
