In a cosmopolitan city where diversity is celebrated, diverse cultures and ethnicities coexist harmoniously, but with a history of tensions in the past, it is important to guard against the forces that can use these very traits to cause chaos. In such a society, words and actions can become a powerful tool for both building and burning bridges. The way people communicate with each other can have a significant “cause and effect” impact on the coexistence of diverse groups.
One of the main threats to coexistence in a cosmopolitan city is the use of provocative language. Words that are intended to hurt, offend, and threaten others can quickly escalate tensions and create an environment of fear and mistrust. This type of language can create an “us vs. them” mentality, which can unfortunately lead to violence, prejudice, and discrimination if left unchecked.
And then there is silence, another cause for concern in a fragile cosmopolitan city. When people do not speak up against provocative language or actions, they are effectively endorsing them. This silence can be interpreted as a betrayal of trust. When people do not speak out against hate speech or discrimination, they are effectively allowing it to continue, which can be extremely dangerous to the fabric of society.
Mutual respect is essential in a friendly cosmopolitan city. People must respect each other’s differences and embrace diversity. This respect must be extended to all tribes and ethnicities, no matter how different they may seem. This respect must also extend to language and communication. People must recognize that their words have a powerful impact on others, and they must use them carefully.
In a community where tribal tensions exists, focusing on what unites us is far more profitable than what divides us. People must find a common ground and build relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. This means focusing on shared values, cultural practices, and traditions. It also means being open-minded and willing to learn from others, even if their beliefs and practices are different. And in the event some people stray away from those shared values, we speak up and move swiftly to caution them before it escalates.
I will close with this scripture from the bible in Ecclesiastes 10:10 which reads “If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.” A diverse community can be a city’s competitive advantage but how can that city leverage on that strength if wisdom is not applied? The way we communicate with each other has a significant “cause and effect” on the peaceful coexistence of different ethnic groups. We must be mindful of the verbal and non-verbal communication we use, speak out against hate speech and discrimination, and embrace mutual respect for everyone.
